Chicago Hospital Expands Inpatient Mental Health Beds Amid Citywide Shortage
A Chicago hospital is adding 22 new inpatient behavioral health beds to address a shortage across Cook County.
A major Chicago hospital is adding 22 new inpatient behavioral health beds at its South Side campus, a response to a persistent shortage of psychiatric inpatient capacity across Cook County that has left emergency departments regularly boarding mental health patients for days awaiting a bed.
The expansion will convert underused administrative space into a dedicated psychiatric unit with private rooms, a supervised group therapy space, and a secure outdoor courtyard, features hospital officials said are standard in newer behavioral health facilities but were absent from the county's existing psychiatric bed stock.
"We've had patients sitting in our emergency department for three, four, sometimes five days waiting for a psychiatric bed to open up somewhere in the region," said the hospital's chief medical officer for behavioral health. "That's not appropriate care for someone in a mental health crisis, and it's been a problem for a long time."
Cook County has faced a documented shortage of inpatient psychiatric beds for over a decade, with county health officials estimating current capacity meets only a fraction of demonstrated need. The new unit is expected to begin admitting patients within the next several months following final state licensing approval.
The hospital said the expansion was funded partly through a state grant targeting behavioral health infrastructure, part of a broader Illinois effort to add psychiatric bed capacity statewide after years of hospitals converting such beds to other uses due to lower reimbursement rates.
