Chicago's First Refillable Beauty Products Store Opens in Logan Square
A new refillable beauty and personal care products store opened in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, letting customers refill containers to cut packaging waste.
A new refillable beauty and personal care products store opened in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood this month, allowing customers to bring in their own containers to refill shampoo, lotion, and cleaning products directly from bulk dispensers rather than purchasing new plastic packaging each time.
The store stocks a rotating selection of shampoos, body washes, lotions, and cleaning products from smaller manufacturers who supply concentrated formulas in bulk containers, a model store owners say significantly reduces the amount of single-use plastic packaging typically associated with beauty and personal care purchases.
"Every bottle a customer refills instead of throwing away is one less piece of plastic that has to be manufactured, shipped, and eventually thrown out," said the store's owner, who previously worked in sustainability consulting before opening the shop. "Logan Square felt like the right neighborhood for this because there's already a strong customer base here that cares about where their products come from."
The refill model requires customers to make a slightly larger upfront investment in reusable containers, though store owners say per-ounce pricing on refills typically runs lower than comparable prepackaged products over time. The store has partnered with several local package-free grocery initiatives to cross-promote sustainable shopping options within the neighborhood.
Chicago has seen a small but growing cluster of package-free and refill-focused retail concepts open in recent years, part of a broader national trend toward reducing packaging waste in personal care purchases. The Logan Square store's owner said early customer response has exceeded initial expectations, with plans to potentially add a second location within the next two years if current growth continues.
