Northern Illinois Lake Resorts Add Wellness Packages to Capture Summer Tourism Spending

Several resorts near northern Illinois's lake communities have introduced bundled wellness packages this summer combining spa treatments, sunrise lakeside yoga classes, and healthy dining options, an effort to capture a larger share of tourism spending from visitors increasingly interested in wellness-oriented vacation experiences rather than traditional lake trip itineraries.

Resort operators said the packages respond to booking data showing a growing subset of summer visitors searching specifically for wellness amenities when choosing accommodations, a trend that has accelerated area resorts' investment in spa facilities and fitness programming that previously played a secondary role to boating and swimming amenities.

"Guests used to just want a cabin close to the water and maybe a decent dock, and now a meaningful number of our bookings are coming from people specifically asking what spa services and fitness classes we offer before they even ask about the view," said the general manager of a northern Illinois lake resort that added a wellness package option this year. "That's a real shift in how people are thinking about a lake vacation."

The packages typically bundle a spa treatment, a fitness or yoga class, and a healthy dining credit at the resort's restaurant into a single pricing tier, an approach resort operators say increases average revenue per guest compared with visitors who might otherwise only book a standard cabin. Several resorts have added lakeside yoga instructors specifically to support the new packages during peak summer months.

Regional tourism officials said the wellness tourism trend aligns with broader hospitality industry patterns showing growing visitor interest in health-oriented travel experiences, particularly among Chicago-area residents looking for a shorter drive than more distant wellness retreat destinations. Resort operators said they plan to expand wellness package offerings further if summer demand continues justifying the additional staffing and programming investment.
