Illinois Institute of Technology's College of Engineering Earns Renewed Top Accreditation

Illinois Institute of Technology's College of Engineering has earned a ten-year renewal of its accreditation, a distinction held by only a portion of engineering programs nationwide, following a review process that took more than a year to complete.

The accreditation review examined the college's curriculum, faculty research output, and post-graduation employment outcomes, with reviewers specifically praising the college's interdisciplinary design studio, which places student teams with real Chicago-area manufacturers and startups for a full year of supervised engineering design work.

"Getting re-accredited isn't just a formality — it forces you to prove that what you're teaching still matches what employers actually need," said the dean of the College of Engineering. "The design studio program was one of the things reviewers kept coming back to because it's not just classroom coursework."

The university has steadily grown its graduate engineering programs over the past several years, adding a part-time master's degree aimed specifically at working professionals in the Chicago manufacturing and technology sectors. School officials said enrollment in the part-time program has grown by roughly 20 percent since it was restructured to allow evening and hybrid coursework.

University leadership said the renewed accreditation strengthens the college's standing as it competes for regional engineering students against larger programs at UIUC and Northwestern, both of which draw from a similar pool of Chicago-area working professionals.
