Harold Washington College Launches Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Partnership

Harold Washington College, part of the City Colleges of Chicago system, has launched a new advanced manufacturing workforce partnership with several regional manufacturers across the Chicago metro area, aiming to move students directly from a short-term certificate program into entry-level, well-paying manufacturing technician jobs.

The program, developed with input from employers across the region's industrial corridor, restructures the college's existing industrial technology curriculum around specific technical certifications that manufacturers say they struggle to find enough candidates for, including robotics maintenance and precision machining credentials.

"We kept hearing from employers that they had open positions they couldn't fill, and students who wanted those jobs but didn't know exactly which skills to build," said the director of Harold Washington College's advanced manufacturing program. "This partnership closes that gap directly instead of guessing what employers want."

Under the new agreement, participating employers will offer paid apprenticeships to students during their certificate program, with several committing to interview all students who complete the apprenticeship and pass a hands-on competency assessment. College officials said roughly 220 students are expected to enroll in the restructured program in its first year.

Illinois economic development officials have praised the partnership as a model for connecting community college training directly to the region's dense concentration of manufacturing employers. Harold Washington College said it plans to expand the model to other technical programs, including logistics and supply chain management, if the manufacturing partnership proves successful.
