Several spas in Galena, the historic river town in Illinois's far northwest corner, have introduced weekend getaway packages this year aimed at attracting visitors from Chicago seeking a lower-key wellness retreat alternative to busier destinations.

The packages typically bundle overnight accommodations at partner inns and bed-and-breakfasts with a full spa treatment menu, positioning Galena's rolling hills and historic downtown as a selling point for visitors seeking a more relaxed atmosphere than a typical weekend shopping trip through the town's antique shops and galleries.

"We're never going to compete with the shops on Main Street for foot traffic, and we've stopped trying to," said the owner of a Galena spa that partnered with a nearby inn on a new weekend package. "What we can offer is genuine quiet and a slower pace, and it turns out there's real demand for that from people who are exhausted by how busy their weekends usually are."

The packages have found a particular audience among visitors from the Chicago metro area looking for a scenic multi-hour drive rather than a shorter regional getaway, treating the distance itself as part of the appeal. Spa owners said early bookings have skewed toward couples and small groups of friends rather than solo travelers.

Regional tourism officials have expressed interest in supporting the wellness tourism packages as part of broader efforts to diversify Galena tourism beyond its traditional reliance on fall foliage season visitors. Spa owners said they plan to expand package offerings into additional months of the year if demand continues to build.
