Felicia Okonkwo's Chicago Childcare Network Expands to Address Waitlist Crisis

Felicia Okonkwo, founder of Chicago-based Lakeview Learning childcare centers, is opening four new locations across the city this year, an expansion aimed at addressing childcare waitlists that have stretched beyond a year in some Chicago neighborhoods.

Okonkwo opened her first childcare center thirteen years ago after struggling to find affordable, quality care for her own children while working full time, growing the company slowly to six locations before this year's larger expansion. The company has built a reputation for keeping tuition below many competing centers by operating on tighter administrative overhead rather than cutting teacher pay or classroom ratios.

"I've had parents cry in my office because they finally got off a waitlist that started before their baby was even born," Okonkwo said. "Every time I open a new location, I know exactly how many families that's going to help, because I've seen the waitlist numbers myself."

The expansion will add roughly 300 new childcare slots across the four new locations, funded through a combination of a state childcare capacity grant and a loan from a community development financial institution focused on Chicago small businesses. Okonkwo said staffing remains the company's biggest constraint, given persistent difficulty recruiting qualified early childhood educators at wages the centers can sustainably pay.

Lakeview Learning currently employs approximately 130 staff across its Chicago locations. Okonkwo said the company is also lobbying city officials for expanded childcare subsidy programs, arguing that even with the new locations, citywide demand will continue to outpace available slots.
